I took the short way into college, through the St. Michael’s gate and past the Grille and JCR to the North Quad. Having rounded the east end of the Hall, I was making my careful way around the perimeter of the sacrosanct Front Quad when Colt Smith, wearing the OD’s armband, popped out of the Guard Room.

“Sir,” he said, as his hand snapped to the brim of his service cap, “Ms. Brownstein directs me to ask whether the President of the Board might be able to join her and Ms. Erdenberger for a meeting with Brigadier Hinton, the Domestic Bursar.”

“At ease, Mr. Smith.”

He relaxed noticeably. “Thank you, sir. Did I do that right, about not ‘presenting her compliments’?”

“Yes, Colt. Only for a senior officer addressing a junior, if I remember correctly. You didn’t mention a time: are they meeting right now?”

“Yes, sir. I believe the Brigadier must have already been in the office for a few minutes, actually, sir. They seemed to have been talking for a while when she called me up to the office.”

“Very good. Off we go then.”
